Explosion Protection and Prevention
in Silos

Silos are essential for the storage of solid bulk products, but they also represent one of the points with the highest risk of explosion in industrial facilities. During filling and emptying operations, explosive atmospheres can be generated by the accumulation or suspension of combustible dust, especially if the loading, unloading and ventilation conditions are not adequately controlled.

Why can it be given
an explosion in a silo?

During filling, emptying or pneumatic conveying operations, clouds of suspended dust are common. These can mix with the air, generating an explosive atmosphere. If it coincides with an ignition source, such as mechanical sparks, electrostatic discharges or flames carried from other equipment (collectors, elevators…), a deflagration can start.

An explosion in a poorly protected silo can set off a chain reaction, spreading through ducts, filters, or ventilation systems.

Main risks in Silos:

  • Dust clouds during filling and unloading.
  • Ignition by sparks, static or flames spread from interconnected equipment.
  • Explosion propagation to adjacent equipment.
  • Unplanned stops.
  • Risk to the safety of personnel.
