Silos are essential for storing bulk solids, but they also represent one of the greatest explosion hazards in industrial facilities. During filling and emptying, explosive atmospheres can form from accumulated or suspended combustible dust, especially if loading, unloading and ventilation conditions are not properly controlled.

Why can
a silo explode?
During filling, emptying or pneumatic conveying, dust clouds commonly form. They can mix with air and create an explosive atmosphere. If there is also an ignition source, such as mechanical sparks, electrostatic discharges or flames carried over from other equipment (dust collectors, bucket elevators, etc.), a deflagration can start.
An explosion in a poorly protected silo can trigger a chain reaction, propagating through ducts, dust collectors or ventilation systems.
