Chemical Explosion Suppression / Chemical Isolation

Chemical explosion suppression is an active protection system that acts within milliseconds, extinguishing the incipient flame and reducing the pressure before the explosion fully develops. It can be combined with a chemical isolation system to prevent the explosion from propagating through ducts to other connected equipment.

Chemical explosion suppression is an active protection system that acts within milliseconds, extinguishing the incipient flame and reducing the pressure before the explosion fully develops. It can be combined with a chemical isolation system to prevent the explosion from propagating through ducts to other connected equipment.

It works by detecting a deflagration immediately with pressure or infrared radiation sensors. When a sudden change is detected, the system discharges an extinguishing agent (food-grade sodium bicarbonate) that floods the protected volume, eliminates the flame and reduces the internal pressure.

These systems are used in enclosed equipment where combustible dust clouds are common and venting to the outside is not feasible, or where a fast, clean, enclosed solution is required. They are especially suitable for grinding, conveying, mixing or storage of combustible solids.

How does it work?
The system works in three stages:
1. Detection. Pressure or infrared radiation detectors identify the first signs of an explosion (a sudden pressure rise or flame formation).
2. Activation. The signal is sent to the control system, which verifies it and opens the pressurized container.
3. Suppression and isolation. The extinguishing agent (food-grade sodium bicarbonate) is released at high speed, extinguishing the flame and reducing the pressure. With a chemical isolation valve, propagation to other equipment is also blocked.
