The ENHIGMA Project Continues Its Progress at ITECAM

On November 28, 2018, the ITECAM(Castilla-La Mancha Industrial Technology Center) headquarters in Tomelloso hosted a new progress meeting for the project ENHIGMA, “Optimization and improvement of PEM electrolysis cells for hydrogen production through simulation and experimentation”.
The session was attended by representatives of each of the consortium members working on the initiative:
- Adix Ingeniería
- National Hydrogen Center (CNH2)
- Hidrógena Desarrollos Energéticos
- FLUBETECH
- Navarre Industry Association (AIN)
- ITECAM
The main goal of the project is to develop hydrogen production equipment based on water electrolysis with PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) technology that offers greater durability and efficiency than current systems on the market, at a lower production cost.
The progress meeting reviewed the results obtained so far to improve electrolyzer performance, both in design, through mechanical (FEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, and in the selection of materials and coatings for bipolar plates that withstand the operating conditions of PEM electrolysis.
Different proposals for machining and coating these components at the lowest possible cost while meeting bipolar plate requirements were also discussed. Finally, the next steps were defined to build a first prototype incorporating all these results in 2019.
The ENHIGMA project is part of the Retos-Colaboración 2016 call of the Spanish State Program for Research, Development and Innovation Oriented to Societal Challenges, within the 2013–2016 State Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation of the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.
